Contents of a good first aid kit – what it includes and why

A good first aid kit is a well-thought-out whole, designed to enable quick and safe first aid in situations where help is needed immediately.

Definition of a good first aid kit

A good first aid kit is designed according to its intended use. It contains high-quality and durable equipment that can safely and effectively treat common accidents and injuries. What matters is not just what the kit contains, but also how the equipment is organized and how easily it can be used.

The kit itself must also be durable, easy to move, and easy to open. Water resistance may also be necessary in certain conditions.

A high-quality first aid kit supports the provision of first aid in situations where there is no time to waste and decisions must be made quickly. Clarity, a logical structure, and ease of use are as important as the contents themselves.

Key contents of a good first aid kit

Most first aid kits contain a set of basic equipment that forms the foundation of first aid. These can be used to provide help in a variety of situations, from small wounds to more serious injuries.

A good first aid kit includes:

  • Wound cleaning and wound care supplies for treating minor and medium-sized injuries

  • Bandages and pressure dressings for bleeding control

  • Protective gloves for hygiene and safety

  • Scissors and other basic tools for handling first aid supplies

  • Cold pack for pain and swelling relief

  • Clear and easy-to-read first aid instructions

  • A durable and easy-to-open kit suitable for its intended use

Wound care and protection

Wound care supplies are the core of a first aid kit. They can be used to clean, protect, and, if necessary, bandage a wound to prevent further damage and infections. Different sizes of dressings and wound cleaning tools enable first aid to be given for various injuries.

Bleeding control

Heavy bleeding is one of the most serious first aid situations. A good first aid kit contains tools to stop bleeding quickly and effectively. Pressure dressings and sturdy bandages play a key role here, as they can prevent the situation from worsening before further treatment.

Protective equipment and hygiene

In first aid, protection is important for both the helper and the injured person. Disposable gloves are therefore a basic part of every first aid kit. They increase safety and help keep first aid as hygienic as possible.

Tools and aids

Simple tools, such as scissors and tweezers, facilitate the use of first aid equipment and make operations smoother. They are not spectacular equipment, but in practice, they are often essential.

Cold therapy and pain relief

Cold therapy is an effective first aid measure for injuries such as contusions and sprains. A cold pack helps relieve pain and reduce swelling, making it a useful addition to many first aid kits.

First aid instructions

Clear first aid instructions support actions, especially when first aid skills are not fresh in mind. The instructions do not have to be extensive, but they must be easy to understand and quick to read.

First aid kit contents for different purposes

When assessing the contents of a first aid kit, it is important to consider where and how it will be used.

A first aid kit for home use often focuses on everyday accidents, such as wounds, burns, and common childhood injuries. It should be easily accessible and known to all family members.

In a car, a first aid kit is part of preparedness for situations where help may be delayed. Traffic accidents and long journeys in remote areas place special demands on both the contents of the kit and its durability.

In outdoor activities and hiking, the importance of a first aid kit is even more emphasized. Lightweight but versatile contents, a weather-resistant kit, and easy portability are key factors.

It should be noted that Finnish law does not specifically define the exact contents of a first aid kit. Instead, legislation, particularly the Occupational Safety and Health Act, requires that workplace first aid readiness is dimensioned to meet the conditions, size, location, and risks associated with the nature of the work.

Contents of a tactical first aid kit (IFAK)

A tactical first aid kit, or IFAK (Individual First Aid Kit), is designed for demanding conditions where injuries can be severe and help is far away. Its contents focus specifically on first aid for life-threatening injuries, such as controlling massive bleeding, ensuring breathing, and treating hypothermia.

An IFAK is not intended for all users, but in the right environment, it is an essential part of preparedness.

Can the contents of a first aid kit expire?

Many first aid supplies are sterile and disposable, and they have a limited shelf life. In addition, storage conditions, such as humidity and temperature, can affect the condition of the equipment.

Therefore, a first aid kit should be checked regularly. Expired and especially dried-out supplies, such as gauze, should be replaced so that the kit works reliably when needed.
